Longtime journalist Elliot Carlson presents his book Joe Rochefort's War: The Odyssey of the Codebreaker Who Outwitted Yamamoto at Midway. Capt. Joe Rochefort headed Station Hypo, the U.S. Navy's signals monitoring and cryptographic intelligence unit at Pearl Harbor, and broke the Japanese navy's code before the Battle of Midway, helping to change the course of the war. The February – March 1942 "hit and run" carrier raids in the Pacific were the first offensive actions undertaken by the US Navy after the disaster at Pearl Harbor. Come learn about this pivotal time during WWII from Turning Point co-curator Seth Paridon, who will also be discussing the Battle of the Coral Sea. Two oral histories from the Museum's archives will be shown in conjunction with the lecture.

Jonathan Parshall presents "The 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway: The Turning Point in the Pacific"

Jonathan Parshall is the founder of the web's foremost site on the Japanese Imperial Navy. He has written for U.S. Naval War College Review, Naval Institute Proceedings and World War II Magazine, and has contributed to several books on the Japanese navy. Together with Anthony Tully, Parshall coauthored Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway which was the winner of the 2005 John Lyman Book Award for the "Best Book in U.S. Naval History." Young Historians will put on their historian's hats and tour this special exhibit, paying special attention to the artifacts and photographs that tell the story of the incredible Battle of Midway. The historians will then move up to our classroom for a discussion and hands-on activity. Workshops are designed for children ages 8 – 12. Pre-registration is required for workshops.
